PRESEASON OUTLOOK:

With all five starters and 12 lettermen returning, and the addition of heralded transfer Archie Marshall, the Jayhawks look to field one of their best squads ever.  The Hawks may have the best starting five in the country, led by seniors Greg Dreiling, Ron Kellogg and Calvin Thompson, junior point guard Cedric Hunter, and the Big Eight's Newcomer of the Year Danny Manning.

Providing depth will be Marshall, a slick 6'6 swingman, junior guard Mark Turgeon, and soph forward Chris Piper, who served as a key reserve in the NCAA tourney last year.

KU will face one of the toughest schedules in the nation, meeting such powers as Kentucky, North Carolina State, Arkansas, Memphis State, and Duke.

SEASON SUMMARY:

'86 Team Had All The Pieces To The Puzzle
Larry Brown's third Kansas team was one of its most talented ever. With sophomore Danny Manning, Kansas had one of the nation's top players. On the wings were Calvin Thompson and Ron Kellogg, a pair of sharp-shooters that would have truly enjoyed a three-point arc. Cedric Hunter ran the offense at point guard, and Greg Dreiling rebounded and blocked shots. Off the bench was guard Mark Turgeon and athletic Archie Marshall. Kansas went to the Final Four in Dallas with a 33-5 record and a No. 2 national ranking. Standing in its way was No. 1 Duke.
Coach Brown had his team wear red uniforms, the same color the 1952 team wore en route to winning the NCAA title.  But the new look didn't bring good luck. Manning got into early foul trouble and Marshall suffered an injury against Duke. The Blue Devils won the game, ending the hopes of the Jayhawks.  Louisville, a team Kansas had defeated twice during the regular season, beat Duke in the finals.
