1986: No miracle for Danny yet

Result -- National semifinal: Duke 71, Kansas 67.

Location -- Dallas.

Leading scorer -- Danny Manning, 6-foot-11 sophomore forward, 16.7 ppg.

Final record -- 35-4.

In his third season after replacing Ted Owens, Kansas coach Larry Brown would set a record for victories (35, since tied by the 1996-97 team) and lead his team to Big 12 regular-season and tournament titles.

Paced by a future All-American in Manning, KU barreled through the first two rounds of the NCAA Tournament with a 25-point victory against North Carolina A&T and a 22-point victory against Temple.

Then things got interesting. Against Michigan State in the Midwest Regional semifinal at Kemper Arena, KU was trailing with about two minutes left when the clock malfunctioned during a Jayhawk possession. MSU coach Jud Heathcote blew his lid after the clock stopped for about 10 seconds, which became crucial when KU sent the game into overtime on a shot with about 10 seconds left in regulation.

Brown drew a technical while complaining about Heathcote being out of the coaching box during the clock fiasco, but the Jayhawks kept their cool in overtime and emerged with a 96-86 win.

Against North Carolina State in the regional final, Danny Manning scored 10 straight points in the second half to bail KU out of a five-point deficit and lead the Jayhawks to a 75-67 win.

But a third straight come-from-behind win wasn't in the cards for KU, which fell into early foul trouble in the national semifinal and bowed to top-seeded Duke, 71-67. The narrow margin was remarkable considering Manning was held to four points on 2-of-9 shooting and center Greg Dreiling carded only six points after going 1-of-7 from the field.

KU's talented senior class of Ron Kellogg (6-5 forward, 15.9 points), Calvin Thompson (6-6 guard, 13.4 points) and Dreiling (7-1 center, 11.6 points) left KU without a national title despite three NCAA Tournament appearances.
