LOSSES FROM LAST YEAR ('48 stats):
PRESEASON OUTLOOK:
Kansas will floor an improved basketball five for the 1948-1949
season. Dr. F. C. "Phog" Allen, the notable coaching wizard who
is beginning his thirty-second year at the head of Mt. Oread
hoop fortunes, will have back most of last season's brigade
minus its two top scorers. At first glance, this does not
smack of an improved picture. But most of the lads who
carried the load last year were mere sophomores or freshmen.
Big Seven foes scored a total only of 23 more points than the
youthful Jayhawkers despite clubbing the Kansans eight times out
of twelve.

SEASON SUMMARY:
“Dr. Phog Allen, Kansas Basketball coach, ‘ducked a
wild right haymaker’ tossed by Referee Eddie Davidson in a hubbub that arose
in the KU-Washington University basketball game at St. Louis Saturday night
after Sonny Enns, Jayhawk cager, ‘flicked the official on the nose with his
fingers.’ That was the KU coach’s version of the affair today of what a St.
Louis newspaper described as a ‘near riot.’ Kansas and Washington resumed
basketball after a 21-year lay-off with the Jayhawkers claiming a 46 to 41
victory.”
Allen told the Kansas City Star about the Jan. 15, 1949,
game, saying that the referee, Al Davidson, charged the Kansas bench after being
struck in the face by the basketball when a KU player tossed it to him after a
foul. “Apparently Referee
Davidson erroneously supposed the ball was thrown from our bench.
I stood up from the bench so that I could better understand his
statements. He was protesting, and
while he stood there doing so, Sonny Enns, who was standing next to me, flicked
Referee Davidson on the nose with his fingers.
Apparently Referee Davidson thought I was the guilty individual because
he unloosed a wild right haymaker in the direction of my head.’
Allen ducked the punch, and KU’s reserve players and the other official
helped restrain Davidson. Allen
said, I shifted to one side, allowing the blow to pas on.
I had my glasses on and did not care to receive the referee’s
retaliation on so vulnerable a spot.”
