PRESEASON OUTLOOK:
Expectations were pretty good for 1947, as the top six players from the 19-2 1946 squad returned. Returnees included two former All-Americans, Ray Evans and Charlie Black, together with All-Big 6 Otto Schnellbacher. Unfortunately, the next five best players didn't return, so the '47 team had little depth.

SEASON SUMMARY:
The team got off to a good start, winning 5 of their first six games. But then a malaise seemed to step in, and in a mid-season stretch of six games, the Jayhawks lost five close ones. They finally settled down and won 5 of their last 6 games, splitting the conference season.

Allen missed the end of the 1946-47 season when the university granted him an indefinite leave, allowing him to recuperate from a bout with influenza.  Allen also reportedly had suffered dizzy spells and severe headaches after receiving a concussion during a practice earlier in the season.  He spent his time resting in California.  Assistant Coach Howard Engleman led the team to an 8-6 record while Allen was getting his R&R.

Strange factoid: This team could have a starting five with all having last names starting with E.
