PRESEASON OUTLOOK:

In spite of losing starters Greg Dreiling, Ron Kellogg, Calvin Thompson, and Archie Marshall (who broke his leg and will be a medical redshirt this year), a group which represented 48 ppg and 18 rpg, the Jayhawks have reloaded and look to be a contender again.  Last year's starters Danny Manning and Cedric Hunter, together with strong subs Mark Turgeon and Chris Piper form the nucleus for this season. Joining the returnees are 6'10 transfer Sean Alvarado, redshirt soph Milt Newton, and a core of highly rated freshmen, including  C/F Mark Randall, combo guard Kevin Pritchard, slasher Jeff Gueldner and forward Keith Harris.

The non-conference schedule appears to be  tough overall, with highly rated Arkansas, Pitt, Temple, Louisville, and St. John's on tap, and the Big 8 appears to again be one of the toughest conferences in the country.

SEASON SUMMARY:

KU opened the season ranked 8th nationally, as Coach Brown began his first season with players recruited entirely by his staff.  After 6 wins and one loss, the Hawks ran into trouble, losing to Pittsburgh and Ohio State at the Rainbow Classic in Hawaii, and then were upset by Wichita State, leaving their record at 7-4.  From there, things improved as they won 11 of their next games, barely losing to OU in the process.  Struggling forward, however, they split the next ten games, but qualified for the NCAA tourney.

Seeded fifth in the SE Regional, the Hawks won their first two games but were then clobbered by Georgetown, 57-70 to end the season.  Things didn't get any better, as they found the team were victims of a robbery when they returned to their hotel that evening, and then the team was delayed at the Louislville airport for six hours, due to a scheduling problem on their charter flight.

HIGHLIGHTS:

KU extended it's home-winning streak to a conference-record of 48 games.
