1993: Jordan magic not enough for Jayhawks

Result -- National semifinal: North Carolina 78, Kansas 68.

Location -- New Orleans.

Leading scorer -- Rex Walters, 6-foot-4 senior guard, 15.3 ppg.

Final record -- 29-7.

After 1992 ended in a stunning loss to Texas-El Paso in the second round of the Midwest Regional, KU won 15 of its first 16 games and went on to win the Big Eight regular-season title. A conference tournament title slipped through the Jayhawks' grasp, however, as they fell to Kansas State in the second round.

KU hit its stride in the Midwest Regional with a 22-point victory against Ball State and a 14-point victory against Brigham Young in the first two rounds.

The Jayhawks defeated California 93-76 in the regional semifinal, then earned their second Final Four berth in three years by holding off Indiana, 83-77.

In the national semifinal, Williams once again was pitted against Smith and North Carolina. But in a reversal of fortune from 1991, KU fell 78-68 to Smith's Tar Heels in a game that featured record-setting performances from both teams' guards.

KU's Adonis Jordan and UNC's Donald Williams both went 5-of-7 (.714) from the 3-point line, tying for best 3-point shooting percentage in Final Four history.

The Tar Heels went on to defeat Michigan in the final, giving Smith his second and last national championship.

Jordan ended his career at KU without a national title despite two Final Four appearances. The 5-11 guard averaged 12.1 points during his senior year, leading the Jayhawks with backcourt mate Walters.
