1974: The comeback kids

Results -- National semifinal: Marquette 64, Kansas 51. Consolation game: UCLA 78, Kansas 61.

Location -- Greensboro, N.C.

Leading scorer -- Danny Knight, 6-foot-10 junior center, 12.4 ppg.

Final record -- 23-7.

Facing Oral Roberts in the Midwest Regional final, KU found itself in a seven-point hole with 3:19 left.

A dire situation? Not necessarily. KU had a knack for late comeback wins, having wiped out an eight-point Oklahoma State lead in the last two minutes and a five-point Oklahoma lead in the final 90 seconds.

Still, co-captain Tom Kivisto admitted he was nervous.

"I'm only human," he said. "But we've come back so many times we never let being behind get us down."

So the Jayhawks came back to forge a tie at 81 at the end of regulation. Kansas went on to win, 93-90 in overtime, earning its second trip to the Final Four in four seasons.

Things went downhill from there, though. KU lost to Marquette despite a game-high 19 points from Rick Suttle.

The Jayhawks then met UCLA in the consolation game, which ended with the Bruins' second victory against KU in two Final Four meetings.

North Carolina State, led by David Thompson, had beaten UCLA in the semifinal and went on to defeat Al McGuire's Marquette team for the title.

Where the '71 Jayhawks were paced by a couple of heavy scorers, the '74 team was all about balance. Five KU players averaged double figures that season: Danny Knight, 12.4; Roger Morningstar, 12.3; Dale Greenlee, 11.8; Norm Cook, 11.4; and Suttle, 11.3.
