'74 Team Went To Final Four After A "Miracle"
Kansas turned in one of the greatest comebacks in Jayhawk history on March 16, 1974, and it earned KU a trip to the Final Four.  Kansas trailed Oral Roberts by seven points with 3:19 remaining. The game was played at ORU's home court in Tulsa, Okla., and inscribed on the court was, "Expect A Miracle."  That's just what happened.

Norm Cook's jumper with a minute left pulled Kansas even with the Titans, forcing an overtime. In the extra period, Kansas pulled away for a 93-90 victory.  Kansas advanced to the Final Four for the sixth time.

The Jayhawks bowed out at the Final Four in Greensboro, N.C., losing to Marquette in the semifinals. Still, KU's 27-3 season marked one of the great turn-arounds in NCAA history after a dismal 8-18 record the previous season.
Only seven players saw significant minutes in '74, but all had uncanny work ethics. Tom Kivisto was KU's lone all-conference performer, and he set the tone for the team's workhorse attitude. "They (the other players) knew I was going to give up the shot and sacrifice all that for them, for those who worked hard," Kivisto said.

The previous season, Kansas won just one road game. So a 72-71 win over Iowa in Iowa City may have been a turning point for Coach Ted Owens' team.  KU's Danny Knight, who scored 23 points, had a late tip-in that secured the win over the Hawkeyes. "That game really turned it around for us," Owens said.
