Controversial Play Ended Dreams Of 1966 Team
That could have been -- maybe should have been -- Kansas playing Kentucky and Rupp's Runts in the 1966 NCAA championship game.
In the regional finals, sophomore Jo Jo White, playing in just his eighth college game, hit a jumper at the end of overtime that would have given Kansas a victory over Texas Western (now Texas-El Paso). The officials, however, ruled that White's foot was out of bounds. The basket didn't count and Texas Western went on to the Final Four, where it defeated Adolph Rupp and Kentucky in the landmark championship game. Game films show that White's foot may have never touched out of bounds. Kansas finished the season 23-4 and that team is still considered one of KU's best ever.
