PRESEASON OUTLOOK:
The Jayhawks lost 73% of their scoring from the 1944 squad, returning only 1 starter and two key subs.Jim Mordy, reporting in the April, 1945 Jayhawker, said that "at the beginning of the season the experts picked the Kansas quintet to finish about fourth or fifth."

In total, thirteen of the 27 squad members were in the Navy V-12 program, a program designed to supplement the force of commissioned officers in the United States Navy during World War II. From the V-12 program, most of the Navy candidates went on to a four-month course at a reserve midshipmen's school

Of those who didn't return for 1945,  at least six were cadets in the Navy V-12 training program, and two others joined the armed forces.

"It is hard to pick a starting line-up for the Jayhawkers early in the season.  Coach Allen has changed from the original players he picked for the first game and likely he will still be making changes after the Big Six season starts." Source:  Basketball at the University of Kansas, 1944-1945, by Jim Mordy and Harry E. Morrow.

SEASON SUMMARY:
700: K.U. downs Aggies in a Thriller, January 31, 1945

"Although basketball in the Big Six conference might not have been up to pre-war standards this year, certainly no season has been more exciting, experienced more upsets, or help more suspense than this one.

Until the season was more than halfway completed, four teams had a good chance to win the crown, Oklahoma and Kansas State alone failing to keep the fast pace set by Iowa State and Kansas. This year's Jayhawk team led the leagu during the final three weeks of the campaign but lost their position to the Iowa State Cyclones in the final game at Ames by a wide 61 to 39 margin."  Source: The Jayhawker, April, 1945.

I have a mimeographed copy of a publication called "Basketball at the University of Kansas, 1944-1945", which was compiled, written and edited by Jim Mordy and Harry E. Morrow.  This was kind of a forerunner of the annual Media Guides that have been published by the Athletic Department for many years.

Here are some interesting statistics from that publication:
University Enrollment - 2,758       Civilians - 2,199        Military Trainees - 559
Admission to Home Games:  Season Book (7 games) $4.10  Conference games - $1.00

The 1945 Kansas University basketball team poses in this file photo. The 1945 squad defeated Kansas State in a 39-36 decision to notch the program's 600th victory.
