SEASON SUMMARY:
Adolph Rupp Landed The Perfect Job At KU
Adolph Rupp, long before he became the legendary coach at Kentucky, played for
Kansas' Helms Foundation national championship teams of 1922 and 1923. When Rupp
arrived on the KU campus, he had little money and immediately searched for a
job. Paul Endacott, also a member of the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame and
Rupp's teammate on those national title teams, relays this story about Rupp:
"He told me that he had only $30 dollars in his pocket -- the crops on the
farm not having been successful that year and he was looking for a job. He found
one -- perfect for his characteristics. It was working in a student cafe (The
Jayhawk Cafe) patronized mainly during the late evenings by students who lived
nearby. He attracted many customers because he talked constantly while he was
going back and forth behind the long counter. He really had a "line",
sometimes even quoting passages from the Bible. He was like an orator."

Single seat admission to a KU game in 1921 was 75 cents.
The die-hard fan could purchase a season ticket for 10 conference games
for $5.
