Hal Patterson, a starting forward and second-leading rebounder for Kansas’ 1953 national runner-up, was a two-year football letterman with the Jayhawks as an end and also lettered in baseball. Patterson played 14 seasons in the Canadian Football league, where he was an All-Star. He scored 54 touchdowns in the CFL and had 34 games with at least 100 years in pass receptions.

Hal was at Garden City Community College two years, then at KU for the '52 and '53 football seasons (end/halfback) and the '53 and '54 basketball campaigns. Olympian Al Kelley, a teammate, sings his praises for a lot of things, including Patterson's soaring proclivities. Hal also lettered as a baseball shortstop here, then went to Canada for football.
Pat played 14 seasons in Canada as a brilliant receiver, defender, halfback and anything else they needed. Prince Hal is in the Canadian Hall of Fame. He's been rather incognito for some time, but he farms in the area of U.S. Highway 156 between Burdett and Larned. Hope he's back this weekend.

CAREER:
Patterson, Harold, football player (b at Rozel, Kan 1933). He became a star CFL player early in his 14-year career as a member of the vaunted MONTREAL ALOUETTES passing attack led by quarterback Sam Etcheverry from 1954 to 1960. In 1956 he enjoyed a season virtually unequalled in CFL history, catching 88 passes for 1914 yards in 14 games, records that lasted for 11 and 17 years. His record of 338 yards receiving was set that year and still stands, as does his record for the longest completion (109 yards, shared). He also won the scoring title and received the SCHENLEY AWARD that year. He was traded to HAMILTON TIGER-CATS in 1961, where he played on 3 Grey Cup champions. His career totals of 460 receptions, 9473 yards and 64 touchdowns place him among the finest receivers ever to play in the CFL. His class and physical grace earned him the nickname "Prince Hal."
