Wilt Chamberlain wasted little time living up to his high school and freshman credentials when he blitzed Northwestern for 52 points in his varsity debut, a single game scoring record which still stands on the Kansas books. He went on to earn All-american honors that year (’57) and as a junior in 1958. The 7-1 Philadelphian led KU to the 1957 NCAA championship game where the Jayhawks lost a triple overtime 54-53 decision to North Carolina. He led the conference in scoring as a sophomore (29.6) and a junior (30.1), and still holds 10 school records. Chamberlain, who also lettered in track at KU, passed up his senior year of eligibility to play for the Harlem Globetrotters. He followed his year-long stint with the Trotters with a 14-year career in the National Basketball Association. He played on two NBA championship teams (Philadelphia and Los Angeles), was named the league’s MVP five times, is till the only player to score over 100 points in a NBA game, and finished his career as the NBA’s career scorer and rebounding leader.
