The successor to Clyde Lovellette, B. H. Born nearly led KU to a repeat NCAA championship as a junior in 1953. KU lost in the final, 69-68, to Indiana, but Born was named the tourney’s most valuable player. He was an NCAA All-American that year developing rapidly after his sophomore year during which he backed up Lovellette on the Jayhawks’ national championship team. As a senior in ’54, Born captained Kansas and was a repeat selection as All-Big Seven.
