CHARLEY BLACK (Player: 1922-24)

Born in Alton, IL, in 1901, Black was recruited away from Northwestern by Phog Allen’s persuasive promise that he would help land Charlie a coaching job after graduation.  Black played alongside Paul Endacott, and together they helped lead KU to the 1922 and 1923 Helms Foundation National Championships.  Black’s contribution to the team came in ways other than scoring, noted for his intense defensive style and offensive ball control. He was named All-American twice and national Player of the Year in 1924. A multi-sport athlete, he was captain of the basketball, football and baseball teams.  Black's jersey was retired during the 1992 season. 

After leaving Kansas, he was head coach at Grinnell for one year before moving to Nebraska where he was head coach of the Cornhuskers for six years. He then moved into the business world as an executive of Libby Glass until he retired in 1967 in Sacramento, California.
