PRESEASON OUTLOOK:

In spite of losing three starters, Patrick Richey, Steve Woodberry, and Richard Scott from last year's squad, the Jayhawks have the weapons to contend for its fourth league title in five years.  Returning starters are 94 Newcomer of the Year, soph point guard Jacque Vaughn, and senior center Greg Ostertag, together with sophomore center Scot Pollard and junior forward Sean Pearson, who should contend for starting positions. Joining the team this year are sophomore Jerod Haase, a guard who transferred from the Univ. of California, and two outstanding freshmen, Forward Raef LaFrentz and shooting guard Billy
Thomas.

The Hawks have a big and talented front line, with Ostertag, LaFrentz, Pollard, and sophomore B. J. Williams, together with what could be one of the best backcourts in the nation (Vaughn, Haase, and senior three-point expert Greg Gurley.

The team looks to have both depth and versatility.  Calvin Rayford, a soph backup guard last year, went down with a knee injury this summer, which will keep him out for the season, but he should return next year for his senior season.

The non-conference schedule is rugged, including away games with Massachusetts, North Carolina State, Connecticut and Indiana, and a home game with Florida, and the Big 8 looks tough this year from top to bottom.

SEASON SUMMARY:

The Jayhawks posted impressive non-conference wins over No.1 Massachusetts, No. 2 Connecticut and No. 6 Florida, and swept regular season series with Missouri, Kansas State, Colorado and Nebraska to win the conference title for the fourth time in five years.  KU finished 14-0 at home, marking the 10th time they have been undefeated at home since the opening of Allen Fieldhouse in 1955.

The Hawks entered the NCAA tourney as a No. 1 seed in the Midwest Regional, where they won the first two games handily, before running into hot Virginia. Their 34% shooting against the Cavaliers did them in, to close the season.

This season marked to fifth straight season KU has won 25 or more games, and they played in their sixth straight NCAA tourney, the most consecutive tournament appearances in school history.

HIGHLIGHTS:

  • KU won the conference regular season title for the fourth time in five years.
  • Kansas went 8-4 against nationally ranked teams.
  • The Jayhawks won in Manhattan for the 12th consecutive year.
  • Vaughn, Haase and LaFrentz were all named to the Big 8's All-Academic first team.
  • Roy Williams was named the Big 8 conference co-coach of the Year.
  • Greg Ostertag became KU's all-time shot blocker in KU and Big 8 history.
