PRESEASON OUTLOOK:

Many of the preseason mags picked KU No.1, with four starters returning, including arguably the best backcourt in the country. Senior guards Adonis Jordan and Rex Walters were the leading scorers on last season's team, backed up by one of the nation's best sixth man, Steve Woodberry.  Calvin Rayford, Greg Gurley, Patrick Richey and Sean Pearson should provide strong help off the bench.

Eric Pauley returns as the starting center and will be helped by 7'2 Greg Ostertag, who led the team in blocked shots last season.

Richard Scott, who led the team in rebounding and shot percentage, has a lock on the power forward position.  Darrin Hancock, last year's National Juco Player of the Year, should man the swing forward slot.  Junior Patrick Richey should bring considerable experience.

SEASON SUMMARY:

Final Four Capped Off Unforgettable '93 Season
From beginning to end, the 1993 season was one of the most memorable in KU history.
There was a win over Indiana in Indianapolis; a 21-point win at Louisville to give Kansas its 1,500th all-time victory; and a one-point win at Oklahoma State in the regular season finale with the conference championship already in the bag. Off the court, the Jayhawk coaches were securing one of the best recruiting classes in school history, gaining commitments from Jacque Vaughn, Scot Pollard, B.J. Williams and Nick Proud.

Despite a top 10 national ranking, Kansas was convinced it was an underdog in the NCAA Tournament. CBS' Mike Francesa predicted a first-round upset by Ball State over KU. When Kansas handily defeated the Cardinals, KU's outspoken Rex Walters told the robust Francesa to "go eat another donut."
Kansas played the underdog role well. In the Midwest Regional, Kansas defeated Jason Kidd and California in the semifinals. Cal freshman Jerod Haase, impressed with the Jayhawks' unselfish play, eventually transferred to KU. In the regional finals, the Jayhawks knocked off No. 2-ranked Indiana, earning KU its 10th Final Four appearance.

I personally believe that, had not Ben Davis defected, he would have provided the muscle KU needed against North Carolina, allowing KU to move into the Championship game.

HIGHLIGHTS:

After beating Georgia in the first game of the season, #3 KU took on #2 Indiana in the Hoosier Dome and whipped the Hoosiers 74-69 in a nationally televised game.  KU  lost it's first game of the season to Michigan in the final of the Rainbow Classic in Hawaii. On Jan. 14, the Hawks trounced Oral Roberts 140-72, the second biggest scoring margin in school history.  Two days later, they won at Louisville and grabbed the No. 1 spot in the AP poll.

Although inconsistent in February and March, the Jayhawks clinched the conference title. After the conference tournament, where KU fell to K-State in the second round, the Hawks finally started to play well and won four straight in the NCAA tourney, including another win over Indiana, putting them into the Final Four, matched against North Carolina.  Although Williams won one against his mentor, Dean Smith, in '91, it wasn't to be this year, as the Tarheels took KU 68-78.  "We've been knocking on the door," Williams said, "and we're going to keep knocking until we knock it down."
