PRESEASON OUTLOOK:

SEASON SUMMARY:

As in Dicken’s immortal words, “it was the best of times, and it was the worst of times”, so was the 1991-92 season.  The best of times started early as the Big 8 walked through non-conference foes with a 104-20 (83.9%) record.  Then KU finished the conference season three games ahead of the pack, took the league tournament and were ranked second in the polls.  Six league teams were picked for the NCAA tourney.  KU landed a first seed in the Midwest, and many pundits picked KU to take it all, or at least to have a return match against Duke in the final.  So ended the regular season.

Then the bottom dropped out.  Two league teams dropped out in the first round, when favored Nebraska lost to Connecticut, who was playing without their star player, and Oklahoma was upset by lowly Southwest Louisiana.  Missouri, Iowa State and Kansas all lost in the second round, leaving only Oklahoma State to defend the conference honor. The Cowboys did make it to the sweet sixteen, but ended their season losing to the Fab Five of Michigan.  To make things worse, all the bad guys were winning.  Every time you turned around, the Fab Five were squeaking by to another level, and we had to endure more of Bobby Knight than a normal person deserves.  Kentucky, which should have been banned from basketball for habitually violating NCAA rules, had their three-point game going through the final eight.  It was the worst of times for this diehard fan.

It was a surprise of parallel proportions in many quarters when No. 9 seed Texas-ElPaso toppled No. 1 seed Kansas, 66-60 in the second round of the 1992 Midwest Regional.

HIGHLIGHTS:

KU won the Big Eight conference by three games and swept the conference tournament. #2 Kansas was seeded 1st in the Midwest, but lost in the second round to Texas-El Paso, missing a chance to gain revenge for the loss to UTEP in the 1966 NCAA tourney.
