PRESEASON OUTLOOK:

This year represents significant change for the Jayhawks, with the departure of super-star Danny Manning, coach Larry Brown, stalwart starter Chris Piper, and first-semester starters Marvin Branch and Archie Marshall, and the addition of some talented new recruits and a whole new coaching staff led by Roy Williams.

Despite the loss of six lettermen, the Hawks return three starters, as well as Sean Alvarado, who is coming back from a redshirt year.  Practicing, but not suiting up, will be Rick Calloway, a transfer from Indiana, Alonzo Jamison, a transfer from Rancho Santiago Junior College, and two Prop 48's, Malcom Nash and Sean Tunstall.

The Hawks face a demanding schedule, meeting top powers Temple and Duke on the road, as well as competing in the extremely tough Big 8.

SEASON SUMMARY:

Just before the season started, the NCAA penalized KU for violations the year before.  Actually, the violations were minor, but the NCAA came down hard, prohibiting the Jayhawks from participating in the NCAA tourney and limiting recruiting efforts.  Nonetheless, Roy Williams first year started well, with KU racing to a 13-1 start, with only nine scholarship players.  However, injuries and a tough schedule crippled the Hawks, and they lost 10 of the next 13 games.

Turning things around, KU won the last three conference games, entering the Big 8 tourney at 19-11. Against K-State, however, Kevin Pritchard and Scooter Barry were injured and the Hawks dropped a close one to close the season.

HIGHLIGHTS:

During the year, Kansas achieved it's 1400th all-time victory, making it only the third program to attain that total.

KU finished the year as the seventh best shooting squad in the nation with 53.2%.

Milt Newton ended his career as KU's 14th all-time leading scorer.

Mark Randall set KU's all-time field goal percentage record, finishing 13th nationally at 64.6%.
