PRESEASON OUTLOOK:
The Hawks lost 54% of its production from the 1978 squad, including four starters. However, the incoming recruiting class looks very promising with freshmen Tony Guy, a slick combo guard/forward, and forward Dave Magley, along with juco transfer Chet Giles.

SEASON SUMMARY:

KU was 4-0 early in the 1978-79 season when the Jayhawks visited Kentucky on Dec. 9.  KU was ranked fifth in the country, and Kentucky, the defending national champion, was No. 10.  Kansas led 35-28 at intermission but went into a four-corners offense in the second half when it ran into foul trouble.  Tha allowed Kentucky to whittle away at the lead, and the score was 56-56 at the end of regulation.

The Jayhawks had pulled ahead by six points with 31 seconds left in the overtime.  But they saw Kentucky hit two baskets and two free throws to tie it at 66 with three seconds remaining.  After Kentucky’s second free throw, Mac Stallcup and at least two other Jayhawks all called time out.  KU didn’t have one.

Kyle Macy hit the free throw for Kentucky, and th Wildcats won 67-66.  “It was strictly instinct,” Stallcup said in the Kansan.  It was a tough losss that partially set the tone for what became a frustrating season.  Despite having Valentine, Mokeski, Wilmore Fowler and freshmen Tony Guy and David Magley, KU finished 18-11 overall and 8-6 in the Big Eight for a second-place tie.

Before a home game against Oklahoma on Feb 10, 1979, KU was presented with the Big Eight Sportsmanship award.  Owens then promptly showed just how sportsmanlike he could be.  KU superstar Darnell Valentine had stolen the ball and was racing the length of the court for a layup when OU’s Terry Stotts undercut him from behind, sending Valentine flying into the padded support for the goal.  Valentine was allright, but Owens lost his cool and rushed the Oklahoma bench.  He was outraged because he believed that the KU guard had been the target of rough tactics in the league.  A column in the Wichita Eagle gave this account of Owens’ outburst:  “the Kansas coach pushed his way into the Oklahoma bench area and was seen swinging his arm at OU coach Dave Bliss.  There was some shoving before Sooners’ star John McCullough pulled Owens away.  One of the officials, John Dabrow of Wichita, finally escorted Owens back toward the KU bench.  Owens was not dealt a technical foul…

Bliss called Owens’ actions “ungentlemanly.”  An Oklahoma sportscaster called Owens “a bush leaguer.”  KU won the game 74-62, with Valentine scoring 19 points.
