PRESEASON OUTLOOK:
Kansas returns four starters and eight lettermen for the 1976-77 season. Also returning is Donnie Von Moore, who was medical redshirt last year. "I think we have improved our weaknesses from a year ago.  Our several new faces all should help.", Owens said.  Because of the improved depth, speed and quickness, Owens plans to press full court.

SEASON SUMMARY:
KU opened with five consecutive wins before a much-anticipated trip to Lexington to face Kentucky.  It was one of the first games in Rupp Arena, the massive 25,000-seat structure named in honor of Adolph Rupp, who had played for James Naismith at Kansas.Kentucky played inspired basketball and thrashed the Jayhawks, 90-63. The Jayhawks showed progress and finished the year with an 18-10 record.

Kansas State traveled to Allen Fieldhouse on Feb. 12, 1977, for a game that was broadcast nationally on NBC.  The 16,138 fans in attendance and those in televisionland were treated to a thriller.  With 33 seconds remaining, KU co-captain Ken Koenigs hit two free throws to tie the game at 83.  But Koenigs’ reign as a hero was short-lived.  After K-State failed to inbound the ball in five seconds, KU took possession.  Koenigs counted to three in his head while trying to inbound the ball (just as Owens had drilled his players to do) and when he couldn’t, he called time out.  But KU had already used its allotted four time-outs, and Koenigs was charged with a technical foul.

K-State’s Curtis Redding hit the free throw for his 34th point.  The Wildcats had the lead and the ball and scored once more to wrap up an 86-83 victory.  Several days later, Big Eight supervisor of officials Bernie Saggau said there actually should have been a jump ball after the technical shot because of the “False double foul” rule – both teams had committed infractions back-to-back.  The score would have been 84-83 in favor of K-State at the jump ball, and KU players and coaches weren’t about to say they should’ve or could’ve won.  That’s because KU had missed three wide-open layups in the late going and Owens had called time out to make a substitution that he later said was unnecessary.  “If there’s anyone to blame,” Owens said in the Kansas, “its me for not having a time-out left.”
