SEASON SUMMARY:
With White and Bohnenstiehl back, KU’s goal at the beginning of the 1967-68 season was to become the first Big Eight team to qualify for three straight NCAA tournaments. It didn’t happen.

A 19-7 overall record and a second-place finish in the Big Eight were only good enough for the school’s first berth in the National Invitational Tournament.

Kansas had started the season with a non-conference schedule that Owens called “the toughest we’ve ever faced.”  Before the Big Eight preseason tournament, KU faced a home-and-home series with defending Missouri Valley champion Louisville and single games against Utah State, Loyola-Chicago, Cincinnati, Texas A&M, St. Louis and Stanford.  The Jayhawks went 6-2 in the stretch, losing only to Louisville and Loyola.  But losses to Kansas State and Nebraska late in the conference season left KU with a 10-4 Big Eight record.

Junior guard Phil Harmon lit up Temple for 21 points in KU’s first round NIT game in New York, leading KU to an 82-76 victory as JoJo added 19 points, Dave Nash 17 and Bohnenstiehl 15.  Bohnenstiehl again scored 15 as KU beat Villanova 55-49 in the second round.  Bohnenstiehl then scored 17 points and White 16 in the semifinal as KU beat St. Peter’s 58-46.

The NIT final pitted KU against Dayton, and the game was tied at halftime, 25-25.  But Dayton pulled away in the second half to win 61-48 in front of 19,000 at Madison Square Garden.  Bohnenstiehl scored 12 points, bringing his tournament average to 14.7 a game.
