KU lost Wesley, Lopes and Lewis from the 1965-66 team but
returned White, Franz and two top reserves, Rodger Bohnenstiehl and Bob Wilson.
The Jayhawks also had a sophomore class that Owens called his best to
that point. That class included
6-foot-8 bruiser Vernon Vanoy and
6-7 Howard Arndt.
Bohnenstiehl led the Jayhawks in scoring with a 16.4 point
average despite suffering several minor injuries, including two cuts to the head
that required a total of 22 stitches, prompting one writer to note,
“Bohnenstiehl leads the Big Eight in shooting and stitches.”
The Jayhawks finished the conference season 13-1 for their
second-straight conference title and earned the school’s first back-to-back
trips to the NCAA Tournament in 14 years.
Despite playing in Lawrence, the Jayhawks fell in the first round to Houston 66-53. White scored 18 points in the game and had 22 the next night as KU beat Louisville 70-68 in a regional consolation game.
