PRESEASON OUTLOOK:
The 1963-64 KU Media Guide stated that “With a good upcoming sophomore crop, the Jayhawkers figure to battle Colorado, Oklahoma and Missouri for third place, with K-State and Oklahoma State as the early favorites. Coach Harp returns three starters and five other letterman from a club that peaked early a year ago.”

The starting frontcourt consisted of twin towers 6’7 junior George Unseld, KU’s leading scorer and rebounder in ‘63 and 6’11 sophomore Walt Wesley, who led  the freshman squad in scoring last season. On the wings were 6’3 senior Harry Gibson and 6’4 soph Steve Renko, who also quarterbacked the football team and pitched on the baseball team.  Senior Al Correll, formerly a shooting guard, took the point.  Also in the regular rotation were guards Dave Schichtle, a 6’2 junior, and 6’1 sophomore Delvy Lewis, together with sophomore forward Riney Lochmann.

SEASON SUMMARY:
After a mid-season loss to K-State, Harp was hanged and burned in effigy on campus.  The Jayhawks won five of the final eight games to finish 13-12 overall and 8-6 in the Big Eight.  But the season-ending rally was not enough.  After a 21-year relationship with Kansas basketball as either a player or a coach, Dick Harp left the university.  “I have determined that it is time for me to retire from coaching,” harp said in announcing his resignation.  “My association with the university of Kansas has been a wonderful experience.”  Harp said he had considered the decision all season and left with no bitterness.  “From the time I was a little boy, the biggest thing in my life was the University of Kansas,” Harp told the Topeka Capitol-Journal.  “If I had to draw a pattern, I would draw it again.  I was at Kansas as a player and coach.  What more could I ask?  The fact that it’s time to change jobs doesn’t alter that.”

Soon after Harp’s announcement, KU players circulated a petition unanimously calling for assistant Ted Owens to be hired.  KU alums Ralph Miller and Dean Smith were also rumored to have been candidates for the job.
