SEASON SUMMARY:
But by the 1959-60 season, forwards Bill Bridges and Wayne Hightower had started to fill the gap.  Hightower led the Big Eight in scoring, averaging 21.6 points per game, as KU and K-State finished the conference season with 10-4 records.  The two teams split their regular-season games against each other.  On March 9, the two met in Manhattan for a one-game playoff to determine the Big Eight’s representative to the NCAA regional, which was also going to be held in Manhattan.  K-State rallied to send the game to overtime, where KU won 84-82. Hightower had 28 points and guard Jerry Gardner scored 21 to lead the Jayhawks.  Two nights later, KU beat Texas 90-81 to advance to the regional final against No. 1 Cincinnati.

But the pressure-filled games that closed KU’s regular season and the NCAA opener had taken their toll on the Jayhawks.  The Lawrence Journal-World reported on KU’s 82-71 loss:  “With six players going most of the way, Kansas just didn’t have the gas Saturday to go the entire route against classy Cincinnati and the great Oscar Robertson.”  Hightower and Bridges scored 22 points each, but Robertson had 43 for the Bearcats.  KU led 57-51 with 13:45 remaining in the game but allowed Cincy to tie it at 63 with 8:10 to go.  The Jayhawks managed only eight more points as the Bearcats pulled away.  “I couldn’t move near the end,” Hightower told the Journal-World.  “I just wore out.”
