SEASON SUMMARY:
Dr. Allen’s basketball team did not finish in first place in the Valley race but made an enviable record towards the fag end of the season.  He started at the beginning and taught the men the rudiments of the game and had a team that was hard to beat at the end of the year.  It was the first time in his coaching career that a team under his guidance has lost a championship, a reputation in itself.  Dr. Allen coached the K.U. team in 1908 and 1909, when they took the Valley title. He won a state title for the Baker Methodists and went to the Warrensburg Normals, where he won the title from 1912 until he came to K.U.

Dr. Allen is an athlete himself, having won his letter in basket ball and baseball at Kansas, and played on the freshman football team his first year.  He is planning big things for Kansas, and not only plans but gets his ideas under way.

After William Hamilton resigned, Karl Schlademan, head track coach at KU, began the 1919-20 season as the Jayhawks’ basketball coach.  But he didn’t last long.   Kansas beat Emporia State 37-22 in the season opener, and Schlademan promptly resigned to concentrate on his track duties.  Allen stepped in, leading the Jayhawks to a 11-7 record and a third-place finish in the Valley.  It was the first time in his coaching career that his basketball team had not won a league title.  But it wasn’t his last.

In the 1919-20 season, the Kansan reported that the Missouri fans “yelled with delight” when Dutch Lonborg twisted his knee.
