SEASON SUMMARY:

Lefty Sproull Was KU's First Big-Time Scorer

On Feb. 7, 1913, Kansas' Ralph "Lefty" Sproull scored 20 points in a win over Washington (Mo.) University.
The two teams met again the next night. The player who had guarded Sproull the night before (Lacey) was benched for game two.
"I asked (Lacey) who was going to guard me (tonight) and he said the captain of the team got the assignment," said Sproull, who led the conference in scoring three straight seasons. "I proceeded to have one of those nights when everything I threw in the general direction of the basket was on target." Sproull, one of KU's early greats, finished with 40 points in a 68-8 rout of Washington. Sproull's mark stood as a Jayhawk record for nearly 40 years until Clyde Lovellette scored 44 points in 1952. It didn't hurt that Sproull shot all of KU's free throws, which was legal in that era.

Hamilton vowed he would not play the Cornhuskers during the 1912-13 season unless games were needed to decide the conference championship.  But they were needed, and KU lost two of three in a title series, failing to secure a share of the title for the first time since joining the Missouri Valley Conference for the 1907-08 season.

The Kansas carried a description of KU’s new uniforms on Jan. 19, 1913: “The new Varsity suits have a V-neck jersey with a blue body and carry a red stripe around the chest and neck.  The pants are of khaki with blue stripes down the sides and around the bottom.  The shoes are of white elk skin with heavy red rubber soles.  The stockings are of red and blue.  Altogether this is a very good looking as well as novel suit and probably is unmatched in the Missouri Valley.”
