SEASON SUMMARY:
The Jayhawks’ rivalry with Nebraska seemed to heat up with each passing season, and in the Jan. 22, 1912 edition of the University Daily Kansan, two losses to the Cornhuskers were reported under the headline that was sizeable for the times:  CATCH AS CATCH CAN BOUTS WERE STAGED, Alleged Basket Ball Games Were High Class Wrestling Tournaments.  The Contestants Were Adept With The Toe Hold, Strangle Hold, And the Other Holds.

KU lost those games to Nebraska 30-26 and 30-27.  But at least the games’ entertainment value was noted: “All in all the games were fine ones for the spectators.  There was plenty to laugh about, and several things to howl about.  What more is wanted for a basket-ball game?”

The drama with Nebraska that season was just beginning to unfold.  KU won the Valley’s southern division while Nebraska took the northern division.  The teams were scheduled to meet to determine the conference title.  After weeks and weeks of haggling about officials, financial guarantees and playing sites, the schools were unable to agree on a suitable format for a championship series, and the teams were eventually named co-champs.

KU’s Loren “Red” Brown was the conference scoring champion for the 1911-12 season, averaging 13.3 points a game.
