Russ Marcinek, a former member of the men's basketball and track teams, graduated in 1963 with a bachelor's degree in History. After spending two years at Kansas University, he transferred to Saint Joseph's to play basketball and run track. In basketball, he was named to the All-Indiana Collegiate Conference Team and earned an honorable mention spot on the Little All-American Team. Russ was the recipient of the Father Fehrenbacker Chicago Club Most Valuable Player Award and the second leading total points scorer in the Indiana Collegiate Conference in 1963, scoring a personal high of 36 points in one game against Evansville. During his senior year, he averaged 23 points per game in the conference and 20.5 points per game for the season with a two-year points-per-game average of 17.8. In track, he placed second in long jump during the ICC Conference meet and jumped six feet in the Valparaiso relays, which tied SJC's record at the time. After graduating from the College, Marcinek began teaching and coaching basketball at Crown Point High School where he spent four years before taking a job as head basketball coach at Hammond Morton High School, both in Indiana. In 1988, he became the school athletic director and was the first representative of the Hammond school system to serve as Executive Secretary of the Lake Shore Conference. Marcinek also played for semi-pro basketball teams Parkers Ironworkers and General Petroleum Oilers and was a perennial All-Star in Chicagoland and AAU tournaments as well as the MVP in many others. Since retiring in 2000, Marcinek enjoys playing golf. He and his wife, Susan, reside in Hammond, and have three children: Julie, Faith, and Russ.
