Humanities and Social Science

Balfour S. Jeffrey (1906-1992), a former chairman of the board and president of Kansas Power and Light Company, was a longtime supporter of the University of Kansas. The Alumni Association awarded him the Fred Ellsworth Medallion, and he received the Citation for Distinguished Service from the university. He served as national vice president and president of the Alumni Association and for two terms on the Alumni Association Board of Directors. He became a member of the Endowment Association Board of Trustees in 1948 and a member of its Executive Committee in 1963.

BALFOUR S. 'BAL' JEFFREY

Jeffrey worked for 26 years in leadership positions at Kansas Power & Light before retiring as chairman in 1979. The Jeffrey Energy Center north of St. Marys was named after him for his leadership and planning.

Jeffrey was instrumental in facilitating the merger between Christ's Hospital and the Jane C. Stormont Hospital and Training School for Nurses.

He believed people could retire from a profession but should never retire from their social and community responsibilities.
