Doris A. Engel
1922-2000
LIBERAL - Doris A. Engel, 77, died April 25 at Aurora, Colo. She was born
Dec. 27, 1922, in McPherson, the daughter of Oscar Sr. and Mildred Johnson
Larson. She married Jack E. Engel Sept. 23, 1945, at McPherson. He died
Jan. 29, 1997. She was a graduate of the University of Kansas and was a
Watkins Scholar. A longtime resident of Liberal, she was involved in the
family business, Engel Inc., and started two businesses in Liberal, the
Dairy Queen in 1949 and the People's Travel Agency in 1969.
Mrs. Engel was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Liberal,
the American Association of University Women and the Liberal Senior Center,
where she was active in the Sweet Swishers line dance group. She was also
on the board of trustees for Seward County Community College Development
Foundation, one of the founders of the Baker Arts Center in Liberal and was
active in Scouts and youth groups for the church.
Survivors include two sons, John E. Engel of Liberal and Larry Engel of
Dallas, Texas; one daughter, Carol Enright of Longmont, Colo.; three
brothers, Oscar Larson of Galva, Robert Larson of Great Bend and Lewis
Larson of Pretty Prairie; two sisters, Ruth Taylor of Oklahoma City, Okla.,
and Marjorie Halloway of Wichita; and nine grandchildren. She was preceded
in death by one brother, Pete Larson.
