So far this year, it has not been a particularly good season for former Jayhawks.  First of all, long time veterans Raef LaFrentz and Jacque Vaughn were not picked up by any teams this season.  No other current pro is doing as well this year as before.

Darrell Arthur - In his first NBA season with the Grizzlies in 2008-09, Arthur ranked in the top 10 among NBA rookies in rebounds (4.6, 8th), blocks (0.68, 7th) and steals (0.68, 10th) and added 5.6 points in 76 games (64 starts). Unfortunately, the 6-9, 235-pound forward is slated to miss up to four months this season after undergoing surgery to repair a partially torn right pectoralis muscle on Oct. 23. As of this writing, he has rejoined the Grizzlies, but not expected to play soon.

Mario Chalmers - He began his second NBA season as a starter, and through 26 games this season, he has averaged 8.9 ppg and 4.3 assists, slightly below his rookie season.  However, he has recently been replaced as a starter by Carlos Arroyo, who has not matched up number-wise to Chalmers coming off the bench.

Nick Collison - Struggling with injuries and relegated to coming off the bench in his sixth year in the league, Nick's minutes are down this year, averaging 5.4 ppg and 4.1 rebounds per game.

Drew Gooden - After being traded by the Spurs to the Mavericks, Gooden has been a part-time starter due to several minor injuries. Through 25 games, he has been scoring 7.5 ppg and gathering 6.4 rebounds per game, somewhat below his 7-year career averages.

Kirk Hinrich - After five years as the starting point guard for the Bulls, Hinrich has come off the bench last year and this.  Through 25 games, he has scored 8.5 ppg with 3.8 assists per game.  However, starting shooting guard John Salmons has been playing poorly lately, giving rise to the idea that Hinrich may regain a starting role.

Darnell Jackson - In his second season with the Cavaliers, Jackson has been getting about 5 minutes per game.

Paul Pierce - Paul's scoring and rebounding averages in his 12th year are slightly down from career levels, although he has had considerably more help now than in the earlier years with the Celtics.  Unfortunately, as of this writing, he is scheduled to be out for two weeks due to an infected leg.

Brandon Rush - In his second season as a Pacer, Rush is still not measuring up to expectations.  Starting 21 of 26 games this year, he is averaging 7.7 points and 4.2 rebounds per game.

Julian Wright - After opening the season as a starter, he's now apparently out of favor with the coach  and having some injury problems, Wright has averaged 14.1 minutes played in only 17 games.

November, 2008

Eleven former Jayhawks were on the rosters of NBA teams starting this season.

  • Darrell Arthur

Originally drafted by the Portland TrailBlazers as the 27th overall pick, Arthur ended up with the Memphis Grizzlies after two trades.  Now the Grizzlies starting forward, Darrell is scoring 6.7 ppg and rebounding 8.0 pg. He recently scored 23 points in a game against San Antonio.

  • Kirk Hinrich

Just after regaining his starting guard position for the Chicago Bulls, Hinrich injured his right thumb in the third quarter in Chicago’s 100-83 victory over Phoenix November 7.  He needs surgery to repair a torn ligament and will miss up to three months.

  • Mario Chalmers

Selected 34th overall in the NBA draft by the Minnesota Timberwolves, Mario is now the starting point guard for the Miami Heat, and is scoring 6.8 ppg  and rebounding 3.8 rpg.  In a recent game, he set a Heat record of 9 steals.

  • Nick Collison

Nick is the starting center for the Oklahoma City Thunder, averaging 6.0 ppg and 6.7 rpg.

  • Drew Gooden

Drew, after being traded by the Cleveland Cavaliers during the off-season, is now the starting power forward for the Chicago Bulls.  He is currently averaging 12.0 ppg and 8.5 rpg.  With the ugliest beard in the NBA, he’s now challenging Scot Pollard as KU’s weirdest alum.

  • Darnell Jackson

Darnell was drafted 22nd in the second round by the Miami Heat, is now a forward with the Cleveland Cavaliers. Unfortunately, he incurred a wrist injury during a preseason exhibition game and will be out of action indefinitely.

  • Raef LaFrentz

A forward/center for the Portland TrailBlazers, Raef could miss the majority of the regular season due to a shoulder injury.  He has been bothered since last season, when he only played in 39 games.

  • Paul Pierce

All-Star Pierce, a shooting guard on the NBA champion Celtic, is scoring 17.9 ppg and gathering 8.3 rpg. An all-around player, Pierce had 20 points, nine rebounds and five assists in the Celtics' win over the Thunder on Wednesday , November 5.

  • Brandon Rush

Brandon was selected 16th overall by the Portland TrailBlazers, and was then traded to the Indiana Pacers. Brandon has become a key small forward sub for the Pacers, usually the 6th or 7th person off the bench, with 6.2 ppg and 2.0 rpg.

  • Jacque Vaughn

An 11-year veteran of the NBA, Vaughn has been a reliable backup point guard for the San Antonio Spurs.  However, he is being challenged by rookie George Hill, and has recently incurred an injury.  Could be his last year.

  • Julian Wright

Wright started getting some good playing time as a reserve small forward for the New Orleans Hornets last season, but his minutes have been drastically cut so far this season.

  • Scot Pollard

A reserve forward for the Celtics last year, is now biding time while waiting to be called up.  Likely his last year too.

NBA D-LEAGUE

The league just had their draft a few days ago and the season won’t start for a couple of more weeks.  So there’s a lot of time for roster changes.

  • Billy Thomas

Thomas has spent the past 10 years moving from team to team, from league to league. Throw a dart at a map, and Thomas may have played there. Places such as Argentina, Serbia and Cincinnati. He’s had four brief visits to the NBA.  He spent most of last season in the D-League, but got in a few games as a shooting guard for the Cleveland Cavaliers, who cut him in the preseason.

  • Eric Chenowith

Played for the Idaho Stampede last year.

  • Russell Robinson

Robinson will play in Reno: Former KU point guard Russell Robinson has left his professional team in Turkey in order to play                the Reno (Nev.) Bighorns of the NBA Developmental League. Robinson was tapped in the second round of the NBADL draft on Friday.

  • Keith Langford

An All-Star in the NBA D-League Austin Toros last year.

OVERSEAS

  • Sasha Kaun

Kaun was drafted in the second round (56th overall) by the Seattle SuperSonics with the 56th overall pick. His rights were traded to the Cleveland Cavaliers for cash considerations. However, he signed a three-years with CSKA Moscow for a reported $1.6 million per year

  • Aaron Miles

He is currently playing with the Greek Euroleague club Panionios on Telecoms, Athens.

  • Wayne Simien

After being on the 2006 NBA champion Miami Heat, Wayne sat out all last year with injuries, and recently signed with Spain’s Caceres Cuidad de Baloncesto as a power forward.

FORMER JAYHAWKS:

  • C.J. Giles

Giles, who transferred to Oregon State after being dismissed from KU, was recently signed by the L. A. Lakers, but isn’t listed on their current roster.

  • J. R. Giddens

The Boston Celtics, who could have picked Mario Chalmers in this year’s draft, stupidly picked former Jayhawk J. R. Giddens, who transferred to New Mexico, after being kicked off the team.  Giddens didn’t make the Celtics’ roster.

Ex-Jayhawks made splash in playoffs

J-W Staff Reports , Saturday, May 28, 2005

Kansas University was well represented in the National Basketball Assn. this past season. In fact, the Jayhawks had nine players in the league. Kentucky led all colleges with 13 NBA players; Duke 10, while KU and Connecticut had nine. All but one former Jayhawks in the NBA -- Drew Gooden -- made the roster of a playoff team.

KU coach Bill Self is not surprised at the number of Jayhawks succeeding in the pros. "You look at teams that traditionally do the best year in and out. Those teams are the ones with the best players," Self said. "Kansas over the last 15-plus years has had arguably with the exception of one or two programs, the best players in America. I think and hope it'll continue. Kansas takes a back seat to no one in terms of NBA caliber players."

Here's a look at how KU's NBAers fared this season:

Kirk Hinrich, Chicago: The second-year point guard averaged 15.7 points and 6.4 assists and 3.9 rebounds a game. He started in and played in 77 games. Hinrich canned 39.2 percent of his shots, 37.2 percent from three-point land. In six playoff games, he exploded for 21.2 ppg and 5.8 apg.

Nick Collison, Seattle: The second-year reserve forward, who didn't play two years ago because of a pair of shoulder surgeries, averaged 5.6 points and 4.6 boards in 82 games, including four starts. He hit 53.7 percent of his shots. In 11 playoff games, he averaged 8.4 points and 5.0 boards.

Drew Gooden, Cleveland: The third-year forward averaged 14.4 points and 9.2 boards for the Cavs, who barely missed the playoffs, getting eliminated on the last day of the season. He hit 46.6 percent of his shots while starting 80 of 82 games.

Raef LaFrentz, Boston: The seventh-year forward averaged 11.1 points and 6.9 rebounds per game in starting all 80 games. He made 47.3 percent of his shots and 36.3 from three-point land. In seven playoff games, he averaged 6.9 points and 4.9 boards.

Greg Ostertag, Sacramento: The 10th-year center averaged 4.8 points and 5.6 boards in 56 games. He made three starts. Ostertag hit 44 percent of his shots, just 34.2 percent of his charities. In two playoff games, he averaged 3.0 points and 4.5 boards.

Paul Pierce, Boston: The seventh-year forward averaged 21.6 points and 6.5 rebounds. Starting all 82 games, he hit 45.5 percent of his shots and 37 percent of his threes. In seven playoff games, he averaged 22.9 points and 7.7 boards.

Scot Pollard, Indianapolis: The eighth-year forward averaged 3.9 points and 4.2 boards while playing in 49 games, starting 17. He made 47.3 percent of his shots. In nine playoff games, Pollard averaged 1.4 points and 1.2 boards.

Jacque Vaughn, New Jersey: The eighth-year guard averaged 5.3 points and 1.9 assists while playing in 71 games, starting 34. He made 44.9 percent of his shots and 33.3 percent of his threes. He was injured and didn't participate in the playoffs.

Billy Thomas, New Jersey: The 29-year-old rookie averaged 3.7 points and 1.4 boards in 25 games. He hit 17 of 56 threes for 30.4 percent. He missed one shot in two playoff games.

LaFrentz, who is signed through 2008-09, made $9,714,500 last season; Pierce, signed through 06-07, made $12,584,700; Pollard, signed through next season, made $5,792,250; Gooden, signed through next season, made $3,214,000; Hinrich, signed through 06-07, made $2,349,840; Ostertag, signed through next season, made $4 million; Collison, signed through 06-07, made $1,969,680; Thomas made an NBA minimum in a pro-rated contract for number of games; Vaughn, signed through 05-06, made $932,546.
