Washington Wizards President of Basketball Operations Ernie Grunfeld announced today that he has named Milt Newton as Wizards Director of Player Personnel. Newton will begin his duties with the Wizards immediately.

“Milt will be an outstanding addition to our staff,” said Grunfeld. “His work experience in the NBDL and the NBA, and his first-hand experience with the developing basketball talent around the world will be a great asset to us as we work to improve this team for the future.”

Newton was named Director of Player Personnel for the National Basketball Development League in May of 2000. While with the NBDL, Newton’s responsibilities included evaluating, recruiting and signing players and assisting with the league’s day-to-day basketball operations.

Prior to his time with the NBDL, Newton served as the Assistant Director for the USA Men’s Basketball Program. His duties included coordinating National Team trials, training camps, exhibition games and team competitions. He also served as the liaison for USA Men’s Basketball teams during international competitions.

“I am thrilled to have the opportunity to be a part of the Wizards growth and development,” said Newton. “It’s great to be back in Washington and I’m looking forward to working with the entire staff to make the Wizards playoff contenders. I can’t wait to get started.”

Newton attended the University of Kansas where he was a member of the 1988 National Championship team. After college, he went on to play for the Rockford Lightning and the Grand Rapids Hoops in the Continental Basketball Association.

In 1989, Milt graduated from the University of Kansas with a bachelor’s degree in Education and went on to earn his master’s degree in Sports Administration from Kansas in 1992. Born in St. Thomas, Virgin Islands and raised in Washington, DC, Newton attended Coolidge High School in the District.
