Stallworth to manage 'Crumbling Classroom'- July 12, 1996

Isaac "Bud" Stallworth Jr. joined the staff of Design and Construction Management as assistant director June 17. He will manage the "Crumbling Classroom" project on campus.

Construction projects at the Lawrence campus got a $44.2 million boost from the Crumbling Classroom proposal approved by the 1996 Legislature. The long list of construction projects will provide improvements to more than 60 buildings.

Heading the list is the $12 million remodeling of Joseph R. Pearson Residence Hall into a new home for the School of Education and a new $7.7 million Murphy Hall addition to create quality music rehearsal space.

"We're very pleased to have Bud Stallworth join our staff," said James E. Modig, director of Design and Construction Management. "We think he will complement the makeup of our staff with his strong business management background in the areas of scheduling, coordination and communication, all of which will become important in managing the Crumbling Classroom project."

"For the next couple of years, my responsibility will be to coordinate and manage a conglomeration of multiple projects," Stallworth said. "We have about a three-to-five year window of time targeted to get it all done."

Noting the construction costs have increased, Stallworth said, "We need to expedite the design, bidding and contract processes so we can beat the cost of construction inflation and ensure that we make the best use of this opportunity."

The hectic construction schedule means that a number of projects will be under way simultaneously.

"In the end, there is going to be a great improvement to campus," Stallworth said, "but it is going to disrupt some daily routines, and people may have to adjust to some construction noise and inconvenience. We're going to try not to create too much havoc."

Before joining the Lawrence campus staff, Stallworth had been the director of Design and Construction Management at the KU Medical Center, Kansas City, Kan., since 1993.

From 1991 to 1993, he was associate director of management services at the Medical Center.

Jayhawk fans will recognize Stallworth's name, since he was captain of the 1972 KU basketball team. Stallworth was a scoring champion in the Big Eight Conference, was named the All-Big Eight Player of the Year and set a scoring record of 50 points in a Big Eight Conference game. He also played on a number of All-Star and All-America teams.

In 1972, Stallworth was a first-round draft choice for the NBA Seattle Supersonics and the ABA Denver Rockets. He played for the Supersonics from 1972 to 1974 and for the NBA New Orleans Jazz from 1974 to 1977.

Stallworth graduated from KU with a bachelor of social work degree in 1978.
