Former Kansas University basketball player Milt Newton has been named director of player personnel for the NBA Washington Wizards.

Newton, who played on KU's 1988 NCAA championship team, has been director of player personnel for the National Basketball Development League since 2000.

"Milt will be an outstanding addition to our staff," Wizards' general manager Ernie Grunfeld said. "His work experience in the NBDL and the NBA, and his first-hand experience with the developing basketball talent around the world will be a great asset to us."

Newton has also served as the assistant director for the USA Basketball men's program.

"I am thrilled to have the opportunity to be a part of the Wizards growth and development," Newton told NBA.com. "It's great to be back in Washington. I can't wait to get started."

Newton, a native of the Virgin Islands, graduated from Coolidge High in Washington, D.C. After completing his career at KU in 1989, Newton played two years in the Continental Basketball Association.
