J-W Staff Reports , Thursday, June 30, 2005

East Rutherford, N.J.The New Jersey Nets on Wednesday exercised point guard Jacque Vaughn's contract option for the 2005-06 season.

The 6-foot-1 former Kansas University point guard averaged 5.3 points and 1.9 assists in 71 games, including 34 starts, last season -- his first with the Nets. He missed the final eight regular-season games and the postseason after suffering a broken right foot April 2.

"We were very pleased with Jacque's performance last season," Nets President Rod Thorn said. "He adds depth to our point-guard position and is a valued member of our team."

The 30-year-old Vaughn, who was selected in the first round by the Utah Jazz in 1997, has averaged 5.0 points and 2.7 assists in 528 career games with Utah, Atlanta, Orlando and New Jersey.  Vaughn last year signed a two-year deal worth $2 million.
