Lawrence Milton Davenport

Leavenworth - Graveside services for Lawrence Milton “Larry” Davenport, 74, Lenexa, will be at 1:30 p.m. today at Fort Leavenworth National Cemetery.

Mr. Davenport died Friday, Aug. 3, 2007, in Kansas City, Mo.

He was born April 25, 1933, in Newton, the son of Fred Moody Davenport and Mary Jane Hall. He attended Newton High School and Kansas University, where he played basketball for the Jayhawks from 1951 to 1956.

Mr. Davenport served in the U.S. Air Force from 1956 to 1959. He worked as a commercial artist from 1959 until he retired.

He was a member of Delta Upsilon fraternity and Newton High School’s Athletic and Fine Arts Halls of Fame. He also was a member of the 1952 Jayhawks national championship team and won a gold medal at the 1952 Olympics as a reserve.

Survivors include three sons, Lawrence Dean, Kyle D. and Kevin; three daughters, Laura L. Dempsey, Alison L. Davenport and Gina; five grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Prairie Village — Larry Davenport 74, died Friday (Aug. 3, 2007) at Kindred Hospital in Kansas City, Mo.

He was born on April 25, 1933, to Fred and Mary Davenport in Newton. They preceded him in death. He was a 1951 graduate of Newton High School and Kansas University in 1955. He earned All-Ark Valley and All-State honors on Coach John Ravanscroft’s 1957 state runner-up basketball team. He played basketball at Kansas University for legendary Phog Allen. He was a member of the 1952, The University of Kansas NCAA championship team and the USA Olympic basketball team that year. He served in the U.S. Air Force. He was a renowed commercial artist. He illustrated 14 paintings of historical buildings in Newton which are on display at Newton Medical Center. He is the only NHS alumni to be inducted into both the fine arts and athletic hall of fame.

Survivors include sons, Lawrence Dean of Prairie Village and Kyle D of Dallas; daughters, Laura L. Dempey of Bedford, Texas and Alison L. Davenport of Denver, Colo.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Mary and a sister, Wilma Kliewer.

LAWRENCE, Kan. - Former University of Kansas men's basketball player Larry Davenport died Friday, August 3, due to complications of the heart. He was 74.

 

A member of the 1952 NCAA championship team, Davenport lettered at Kansas from 1952-55. The Jayhawks were three-time Big Seven Conference champions and the 1953 KU team finished as NCAA runner-up to Indiana. Davenport averaged 3.7 points per game throughout his career and played in 80 contests under head coach Phog Allen.

 

Originally from Newton, Kan., Davenport was a renowned commercial artist in Kansas City, Colorado Springs, Denver and San Francisco.
