Steve Robinson, who has 12 years of coaching experience on the collegiate level, begins his sixth season as an assistant coach at the university of Kansas.  Robinson joined the Jayhawk staff in head Coach Williams’ initial season at Kansas in 1988-89.

The Radford University graduate is a former ivy League assistant coach, coming to Kansas from Cornell, where he served as an assistant for two seasons.  While at Cornell, the Big Red posted records of 15-11 in 1987 and 17-10 in 1988.  The 1987-88 Cornell team earned the school’s first NCAA Tournament berth since 1954, where it was eliminated by Arizona in the first round.  At Cornell, Robinson was in charge of recruiting, scouting and game-plan preparation.

At Kansas, Robinson serves as academic coordinator for the Jayhawks and works directly with KU’s on- and off-campus recruiting efforts.  Robinson, a member of the national Association of Basketball Coaches recruiting committee, served as head coach of the Jayhawk junior varsity team last season.  The JV team consists of walk-on players who play a limited schedule against junior college teams.

Since Robinson began working as academic coordinator at Kansas, Jayhawk student-athletes have performed exceptionally well in the classroom.  Over the last five years, Kansas basketball players have recorded a 3.0 grade point average or better (on a 4.0 scale) 27 different times in either the spring or fall semesters.  Five different Jayhawks players have been named to the Big Eight Conference All-Academic team over the last five season, including Kevin Pritchard, Mark Randall, Mike Maddox, David Johanning and Greg Gurley.

Last summer, Robinson assisted Williams in Chicago at tryouts for the U. S. National teams.

Robinson, a native of Roanoke, VA, competed collegiately at Ferrum (VA) Junior College for two years (1977-78), where he was a dean’s list student, before transferring to Radford to complete his eligibility.  At Radford, Robinson played for coach Joe Davis, who currently works at Lynchburg (VA) College.  Robinson was the university’s first athletic scholarship recipient and was captain of the Highlanders for two seasons (1980-81).  He received his bachelor’s degree in  health and physical education in 1981, and a master’s degree in counseling in 1985, both from Radford.

Upon graduation, Robinson was appointed an assistant coach at Lincoln (PA) University for the 1981-82 seasons, then served on the staff at Albemarle High School in Charlottesville, Va. For the 1983 campaign.  He then returned to Radford as an assistant where he served three seasons.  In 1981 he was chosen one of the Outstanding Young Men in America.

Robinson, born October 29, 1957, is married to the former Lisa Lorraine Key.  They have a daughter, Shauna, 14, sons Tarron, 5, Denzel, 2, and daughter Kiaya, 1.
