and another trip to the State Finals. In addition, the eight
consecutive Regional Championships have never been matched in
the Quad City Area. In 1996 his Rocks went to the Elite Eight
in the State AA Tourney and finished with a school tying record of
29-2.
Coach Reid possesses an enviable record as a high school and college coach. He began his coaching career as the sophomore coach at Pekin (IL) High School. Moving to Lincoln (IL) as head varsity coach, he turned around an unsuccessful basketball program. The Lincoln "Railsplitters" were a statewide power in the late 60's and early 70's. Reid's Lincoln teams won 174 games during 8 seasons and the 19973 team was rated in the "Elite Eight" and finished with a 30-1 record. Reid then moved to the college level where he was an assistant coach at the University of Kansas for four years. Later at Dodge City (Kansas) Junior College his teams won 80 games in three years including three consecutive conference championships. Having satisfied his desire to coach at the college
level, Coach Reid returned to Illinois in 1980. Rock Island had
enjoyed only modest success since the 1976 season and was looking for
an outstanding coach. The Rocks found the coach and Duncan
Reid found another challenge. |
Coach Reid's players have been
widely recruited by colleges and universities. Rock Island
players are noted for their knowledge of the fundamentals of
basketball. They are also taught that Basketball is a TEAM
sport and that teams who play together win. The teams of Duncan
Reid are recognized as playing "smart basketball".
In the past 18 years 70 of his players have gone to
college with some form of athletic scholarship. |
