JOE HOLLADAY

Assistant Coach, 1994-2003

Joe Holladay, who enters his ninth season as a Jayhawk assistant coach, was promoted within the staff ranks after the 1998-99 season.

When former Kansas assistant coach Matt Doherty resigned to take over the head coaching duties at Notre Dame, Holladay took on Doherty's off-campus recruiting duties in addition to his other assignments within the program.

At Kansas, Holladay's duties include recruiting, scouting and involvement with the day-to-day operations of the basketball office. One of his main responsibilities is overseeing the academic progress of the players. Over the last six years, Jayhawk players have earned first team academic all-conference honors 18 times.

After a career as a highly successful coach, teacher and administrator on the high school level for 24 years, Holladay joined the Kansas staff prior to the 1993-94 season. Since his arrival at KU, the Jayhawks have produced a cumulative record of 249-59 (.808), won four conference championships and three Big 12 Tournament titles.

A 1969 University of Oklahoma graduate with a degree in pre-law, Holladay was a standout guard for the Sooners from 1967-69. As a senior, he served as team captain.

Shortly after graduating from Oklahoma, Holladay embarked on a 24-year career as a coach, teacher and athletics director in the Oklahoma prep ranks.

Holladay earned a master's degree in counseling in 1975 from East Central State University in Oklahoma.

He came to Kansas after working 13 years as a head coach and eight years as athletics director at Jenks (Okla.) High School. Holladay previously served as a coach on the prep level in the Oklahoma towns of Norman, Bartlesville and Lindsay.

In 1998, Holladay was inducted into the Oklahoma Coaches Hall of Fame. In 1982, one of his top players, Steve Hale, played at North Carolina under then-assistant coach Roy Williams.

Holladay was an outstanding prep baseball player who was selected in the Major League Baseball draft out of high school.

Holladay and his wife, Roi, a school teacher, have a daughter, Heather, who is in television commercial production, and a son, Mathew, who is a graduate of the U.S. Military Academy and is stationed in Italy.
