2001-02

IOWA RETURNS SOLID NUCLEUS
Iowa returns the nucleus of its team from last season, including four starters. But, the loss of Dean Oliver, Jason Smith and Kyle Galloway will be felt.
Oliver started all but two Iowa games over the past four seasons and ended his career among Iowa's career leaders in several statistical categories, including scoring (seventh), assists (second) and steals (second). Oliver became the third player in Big Ten history with over 1,500 career points, 500 assists and 200 steals. Oliver led the Hawkeyes in scoring in 1999 and 2000.
A former walk-on, Smith became more and more valuable this season as the injury bug took its toll. Smith reached career highs in points, rebounds and minutes in Iowa's final games.
The Hawkeyes will also be without guard Kyle Galloway, who joined the team for the final 14 games of the season. A Presidential Scholar who had one year of eligibility remaining, Galloway earned his degree in May and is in his first year of law school.
ANOTHER STRONG SCHEDULE
As has been the case in recent years, the Iowa schedule is again very demanding, with a number of road games early in the season against strong opposition. And, for the third straight season, Iowa will meet the defending NCAA champion. That contest will take place Tuesday, Nov. 27 when Duke and Iowa meet at the United Center in Chicago as part of the Big Ten-ACC Challenge.
Along with the usual demanding Big Ten schedule, Iowa in non-conference action will face such opponents as, Alabama, Duke, Memphis, Missouri (possibly twice), Iowa State, Kansas State and Southern Methodist, along with in-state rivals Drake and Northern Iowa. Of those teams mentioned, only the games with Kansas State and Drake are slated for Iowa City.
