LAWRENCE, Kan. -- Four University of Kansas basketball players -- Nick Collison, Drew Gooden, Kenny Gregory and Kirk Hinrich -- were named to the 2001 Associated Press All-Big 12 Team, AP announced on Monday.
Gooden, Kansas' second-leading scorer at 15.8 points per game and leading rebounder with 8.3 boards per contest, was named to the AP All-Big 12 First Team. A 6-10 sophomore, Gooden ranks second in the Big 12 Conference with nine double-doubles this year, and, despite missing five games with an injured right wrist, Gooden scored his 700th career point against Missouri on Sunday. He is the first Jayhawk to receive first-team all-Big 12 honors since Raef LaFrentz and Paul Pierce in 1998.
"I'm very excited to receive this honor," Gooden said. "It was one of my goals to make the team this year, and after I was chosen on the preseason team, I really wanted to fulfill those expectations. I have to give a lot of credit to Coach Williams and to my teammates, because we came into this season with a plan to get the ball down low and take advantage of our size, and that helped me accomplish all I have this year."
Collison and Hinrich were both named to the AP All-Big 12 Second Team. Collison ranks third on the Jayhawks in scoring at 13.8 points per game, fourth in rebounding at 6.3 boards per game and leads the team in field goal percentage at 59.8 percent. Collison, a 6-9 sophomore, also leads KU with 49 blocks this year.
Hinrich scores 11.5 points and grabs 4.3 rebounds per contest, while leading Kansas and the Big 12 with 7.1 assists per game. In addition, Hinrich, a 6-3 sophomore, leads the Jayhawks and the league by shooting 52.1 percent from three-point range.
Gregory was named Third Team All-Big 12 by AP. A 6-5 senior, Gregory is Kansas' leading scorer at 16.1 points per game, and ranks third on the team with 7.2 rebounds per contest. Gregory has scored in double-figures in all 25 games in which he's played this season.
